Two part-time, seasonal Garden Educators (NYC)

Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) is a multi-program community organization that

provides a unique and comprehensive network of education, social-service,

recreation and health programs to more than 22,000 children and adults in

Central Harlem. The majority of the children HCZ works with go to public

schools and attend its engaging after-school programs. Nationally and

internationally recognized, HCZ has been lauded by The New York Times as "one

of the most ambitious social-policy experiments of our time."

Healthy Harlem is a program within HCZ that is designed to instill a culture

of healthy living throughout the Zone. Our programming includes nutrition,

fitness, gardening, and teen sexual health.

We are seeking two part-time, seasonal Garden Educators to work with our team

at selected HCZ sites with elementary-aged students. This position offers an

opportunity for meaningful gardening and teaching experience for the right

candidate. You will be the primary point person for two HCZ garden locations.

We are seeking passionate and enthusiastic lovers of growing food who want to

share their knowledge with others. The Garden Educators will plan and teach

lessons as well as maintain the gardens at their sites. Your input on what

you'd like to grow at your site and what types of garden lessons you'd like to

teach will be welcome.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Plant and maintain garden beds: weed and care for plants without the use of

chemicals;

- Prepare for garden activities by ensuring that you have everything you will

need for class;

- Plan and teach elementary students' hands-on activities in the garden based

on pre-planned curriculum;

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

- Working on bachelor's degree in related field and/or at least 1 year of

experience facilitating or teaching experience with youth (outdoor group

management experience preferred)

- Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production or home

gardening

- Knowledge of relevant topics such as urban gardening, horticulture, health

and nutrition, food systems and food access desired

- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations including youth and

adults

- Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking

skills

- Ability to work independently and be flexible!

Time commitment: Ideally 3 days a week: Mon/Wed/Fri May 30 - August 5, 5 hours

per day. Compensation is based on experience.

June will be a time for the Garden Educators to become acquainted with their

sites and to prepare for teaching gardening classes at their sites by planting

and gathering materials for classes to be held in July. Garden program runs

from July 5th - July 29th and will require the Garden Educator to teach 2

classes (45 minutes - 1 hour each) on Mondays and Wednesdays, with Fridays

used as planning days. Other time will be used for acquiring materials,

becoming familiar with lessons, maintaining gardens and assisting with other

garden-related projects as time allows.

To be considered, interested applicants should submit a cover letter and

resume to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. For the right candidate, there is some

flexibility available in terms of days of the week and hours, so please be

specific about your availability.

No telephone inquiries or recruiters please. Replies will only be sent to

qualified applicants. HCZ is an EOE.
