Dear Students and Faculty,

If you're interested in fieldwork (students) and collaboration & research (faculty) with LA PALESTRA Kids, please get in touch with Ms. Cassandra Lenza.
One of our nutrition alums is already working there. I'm hoping we can establish a strong partnership with this group. /as

From Nicole Lund:
I am writing to put you in touch with the director of LA PALESTRA Kids, a children's program affiliated with the company at which I am the Director of Nutritional Services. I've been with LA PALESTRA, Center for Preventative Medicine for 2 years at which I am both a fitness trainer and nutritionist. LA PALESTRA Kids is looking to find collaborations in East Harlem that are devoted to public health and enriching childrens' lives in exercise, nutrition, and disease and obesity prevention. Please read the email below, written from the director of the LA PALESTRA Kids:

My name is Cassandra Lenza, Program Director of the integrative health prevention program entitled LA PALESTRA KIDS. We are seeking strategic and innovative partnerships in New York City to help tackle our cause of instilling healthy habits and dispelling disparities among underserved children, their families, and communities.

We are an integrative and developmentally-appropriate program that encompasses fitness, socialization skills, and nutrition with engaging activity and originally-composed music. We currently service children in East and West Harlem, teaching the fundamentals of healthy living to those who may not otherwise receive this invaluable education.

In East Harlem, we work in tandem with the Association to Benefit Children, where we provide year-round health promotion and education programs for young children, ages 5 months to five years old, and their families. By reaching out to Hunter College, we hope to strike up a partnership rooted in similar goals for the community's future.

Subject: LA PALESTRA for LA PALESTRA KIDS; Description and Summary

Dr. Spark,

Good morning. My name is Cassandra Lenza, Program Director for LA PALESTRA KIDS, and a social worker at LA PALESTRA, the Center for Preventative Medicine. Thanks to Nicole, we've been able to e-connect so I can tell you a little about our program, and the company, in hopes that the Hunter College faculty will be able to help us foster new connections.

As described in my brief introduction, the LA PALESTRA KIDS foundation, is a registered NYC non-profit and integrative health education program for children. We are an extension of the LA PALESTRA brand, a premier health club and Center for Preventative Medicine with multiple locations throughout Manhattan.

LA PALESTRA's mission is to improve the quality of peoples' lives through exercise, education, and community. LA PALESTRA takes an interdisciplinary approach, calling upon doctors, physical therapists, nutritionists, behavioral consultants, and other colleagues to approach clients' needs holistically.

We are called to spread our mission outside of our small client base, and impact communities that need the education and the resources to create healthy lifestyles. LA PALESTRA KIDS was built out of this mission by licensed clinical social worker, Deborah Manocchia, and her husband, LA PALESTRA founder and exercise specialist, Pat Manocchia. Together, they have unified their specializations into one early intervention program, dedicated to providing health education to the city's underserved communities.

We currently service 150 children attending the Association to Benefit Children's Echo Park day program. These children, ages five months to five years, attend weekly classes focused around developmentally-appropriate curricula and originally-composed music. Teaching points include fitness, socialization, and nutrition and are delivered through engaging activity and imaginative play. We outreach to serve East Harlem community members through our home-based program, and we provide year-round heath promotion services free of charge to the school's growing community.

We see a potential partnership between LA PALESTRA KIDS and the School of Public Health, both dedicated to helping individuals achieve healthier lifestyles. We want to strike up a partnership in East Harlem that will promote reaching our youngest community members. We hope that by creating a collaboration with the largest public health institution in NYC, we will begin to grow our program and spread our service to impact more East Harlem community members. Ultimately, we wish to engage in widespread awareness and be a strong force in preventing childhood obesity and disease to all underserved populations throughout the city and beyond.

Please visit lapalestra.com<http://lapalestra.com> to learn more about or company, and our programs. I've also attached an example of our lesson plans, in which are broken down into four developmentally appropriate classes. For your reference, Mighty Movers is our class for four and five year olds.

I appreciate any assistance you can provide in connecting the faculty with our cause. We are a new non-profit, but are truly passionate about expansion to impact as many families as possible.

Best,
Cassandra Lenza, LMSW
