House Bill Would Exempt Certain Companies from Menu Labeling Rule

Pizza chains and grocery stores would be among companies exempt from an upcoming rule requiring chain restaurants to post calorie information on their menus<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=24c3314b0c13c12a7f596ab7feffedbe2c2c815d1fd0dd111a6bc98c765d93f4> and menu boards, under a bill (H.R.2017) introduced by Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., and Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif. Per the final rule adopted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in late 2014 <http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=24c3314b0c13c12ac3724f5f50eb9cdbed8b4d67175f7e79fb1ba422fecee347> , chain restaurants and food retail establishments like grocery and convenience stores—all with at least 20 locations—must disclose calorie information and make additional nutrition information available to consumers upon request by December 1, 2015; a similar rule covering vending machines operators takes effect December 1, 2016.

The proposed label would have warned consumers that sugary drinks contribute to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.

The Texas Department of Agriculture has proposed overturning state regulations that ban deep-fat frying and sales of certain sodas in schools<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=24c3314b0c13c12ae3dc5d2d363eeecea17011f5d8040dad22db9838373b7c49>. The department is expected to decide in the next 30 to 60 days whether to adopt the amended rules<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=24c3314b0c13c12a9241dfb986c81449e8974f553312f0d3a7cfcdee37812c5e>, which would apply to all schools that participate in the national school breakfast and lunch programs.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has launched a new ‘Healthy Schools Environments’ feature<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=24c3314b0c13c12a29d4257f74009f86c295feb3df51a1949542fd6f960ee16f> highlighting RWJF-funded research showing that healthier school meals and snacks can help improve kids’ diets and may help reduce obesity, as well as that increased physical activity for students improves health and academic achievement. The site includes the latest studies and analyses from leading research institutions, school success stories, and infographics which are easily shareable on Facebook and Twitter. Recent resources include:

In 2010, more than 17 of every 100 Lincoln Public Schools elementary and middle school students were not just overweight -- they were clinically obese. That number has steadily decreased to 15.4 percent, putting Lincoln six years ahead in meeting its goal to reduce childhood obesity rates 10 percent by the year 2020.
