FYI -- new resource from Pew.

The Kids’ Safe and Healthful Foods Project released two pieces of material yesterday demonstrating how national nutrition standards for snack foods and beverages sold outside of the meal program can increase school food service revenue:

An interactive calculator<http://www.healthyschoolfoodsnow.org/calculating-the-cost/> that shows the total food service revenue and overall nutritional value of a USDA school meal compared to those of an a la carte lunch and vending machine sales.

A conversation<http://www.healthyschoolfoodsnow.org/financial-impacts-of-nutrition-standards-for-snacks-sold-in-schools/> about the financial implications of nutrition standards for snack foods and beverages with Neal Wallace, the lead economic analyst for the project’s health impact assessment.

Consider sharing these items with your networks to show the value of national nutrition standards for competitive foods for both student health and school food service revenue. For your convenience, please see sample social media messaging below that we will use to promote these items.

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Sample Social Media

FB: When you give your child lunch money, where does it go? How nutritious is food from the regular lunch line, a la carte line, or vending machines, and how much money do schools make from each type of transaction? The answers may not be what you think. Click to learn more. <link> [http://www.healthyschoolfoodsnow.org/calculating-the-cost/]

Twitter: How much do schools make from vending machines vs. the regular lunch line? Not what you think. <link> [http://www.healthyschoolfoodsnow.org/calculating-the-cost/]

Thank you,

Megan
