The U.S. Food and Drug Administration published final guidance on the implementation of a menu labeling rule<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=afaa198d8fa0fe448a739398b3264ecffc825b3ab258fd3b20ec4b1c6e15951e> that will require chain restaurants and other food retail establishments to post calorie information on their menus and provide additional nutrition information to consumers upon request. The menu labeling provision was included in the Affordable Care Act, passed in 2010; implementation is expected to begin in May 2017.

The number of childhood obesity-related increased from 217 to 304 in the first year of Voices for Healthy Kids—while the bill enactment rate in states with active Voices grantees increased from 10 percent to 15 percent<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=afaa198d8fa0fe4494392c3e7236671e034074a42d1b52ee5c8e6909600ac997>—according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health. Voices for Healthy Kids<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=afaa198d8fa0fe44b9e69f78f6e4d854a8efe5a29bdf9c9c26e273a517073f26>, a joint initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Heart Association, was launched in 2013 to spur state campaigns to address the obesity epidemic.

The city council in Oakland, Calif. has unanimously approved a ballot initiative that would impose a penny-per-ounce distributor tax on soda and sugary drinks sold in the city<http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=afaa198d8fa0fe44b126ff6aace288d4f1a9b957c92fb37a99a44eea31550a0f>.  If approved by voters, the estimated $6-$12 million in annual revenue would be directed to the city’s general fund, while an advisory board comprised of school officials, health professionals, and other community members would make spending recommendations.

Recently updated nutrition standards covering meals served by child and day care facilities participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program are likely to increase whole grain intake and vegetable consumption, as well as lower consumption of grain-based desserts <http://click.rwjfmail.org/?qs=afaa198d8fa0fe4478370a585d8074b96b49761486b42ad7468d690a5ae0d1e0> , according to a literature review from the Kids’ Safe and Healthful Foods project, a collaboration between the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The literature review is part of an ongoing health impact assessment to provide a more complete assessment of the impact of the changes that will take effect next year.

Researchers concluded that the findings “add to a growing consensus that policies and practices that influence the availability of healthier foods and beverages are needed across multiple settings.”
