Administrative Nutritionist, NYC Department of Homeless

The NYC Department of Homeless (DHS) seeks an Administrative Nutritionist for the Health and Mental Health Unit. Reporting directly to the Agency Medical Director, the Administrative Nutritionist will manage the meal programs and vendor relationships for the clients served at Department of Homeless Services (DHS) shelter intake points and in shelters. The Administrative Nutritionist will provide technical assistance, advise on nutritional standards, and serve as the primary contact among food service contractors, shelter providers, and DHS.



Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Monitoring and assessing assigned meal programs and ensuring that all shelter programs and caterers are in compliance with all relevant food standards, including the New York City Agency Food Standards;

• Creating nutrition education materials and providing nutrition technical assistance, outreach, recommendations, and training to DHS and vendor program personnel, sponsors, and caterers in all aspects of food service management and nutritional standards, i.e., menu planning, food purchasing/preparation, storage and safety;

• Making recommendations to food service contractors and DHS providers to ensure compliance with Local Law 50 of 2011 regarding the purchase of NYS products;

• Assessing proposed new sites and food service contractors;

• Ensuring the annual inspection of shelter programs and caterers;

• Reviewing, updating, and approving menus, including formulating and distributing menus and guidance to vendors and providers regarding special diets, such as for pregnancy, diabetes, and allergies, among others;

• As necessary and indicated, completing the nutrient analyses for recipes and menus;

• Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with relevant educational, government/community agencies, and healthcare professionals and providers, among others; and,

•Preparing reports and corrective action plans, as indicated and necessary.



Qualification Requirements

I . A general baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a master’s degree in foods and nutrition from and accredited college, and five years of full-time experience in a nutrition education program in the field of public health, two years of which shall have been in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial or executive capacity;



or



2. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. However all candidates must possess the educational requirements and the two years of supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial or executive experience as specified in “1” above.

Participate in other Center non-WIC breastfeeding promotion activities, both internally and externally.



Essential Functions:

Train, supervise and manage the WIC Program Breastfeeding Peer Counselors including assigning, tracking, and monitoring their participant caseload.

Assist the Director of Nutrition in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the WIC Program including the supervision of WIC staff.

Oversee the Breast Pump program by assisting the Director in budgeting appropriate allocations for breast feeding supplies, purchasing breast pumps, securely storing and maintaining inventory of breast pumps. Train WIC staff annually in assessing breast pump needs and issuance and assist in reviewing competency.

Provide training regarding the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program and the Breast Pump Program to clinical and other appropriate staff on an annual or more frequent basis as needed. Serve as a reliable resource for Center and community healthcare practitioners on breastfeeding and breastfeeding friendly initiatives.

Develop and expand the network of communication and cooperation with other WIC Program Breastfeeding Coordinators by attending NYS DOH meetings, trainings, and coalition meetings.

Plan and initiate quality improvement activities in conjunction with the Director of Nutrition to assure efficiency, effectiveness, quality services and participant satisfaction.

Participate in Center and outreach educational activities in the community and within the Center, as assigned.

Keep abreast of new WIC Program policies and procedures and assist the Director of WIC/Nutrition in updating policies and procedures as needed.

Remain up-to-date on professional knowledge regarding current developments in the field of Maternal and Child Health, breastfeeding, and nutrition issues.

Ensure the timely submission of program documentation and electronic submission including breastfeeding reports in accordance with Agency and State standards.

Perform nutrition assessments of WIC Program applicants; certify women and children based on nutritional risks; provide appropriate nutrition counsel and food packages according to WIC Program policy. Refer WIC Participants to other Departments within the Center or other Community Agencies as appropriate and document all referrals in WICSIS.

Immediately report any problems or unusual occurrences to the Director of Nutrition/WIC or designee.

Demonstrate a professional, courteous and respectful attitude in dealing with participants, immediate supervisor, WIC staff, Vendors, and other employees.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition Required

Registered Dietitian (RD) Required

International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or other Certification in Lactation Management Preferred

Bilingual English / Spanish Preferred

Supervisory Experience Preferred
