Happy Memorial Day! We wanted to let you know that the FDA announced that it is extending the comment period for the two rules on the Nutrition Facts Panel and Serving Size rulemakings until August 1, 2014. http://www.fda.gov/Food/NewsEvents/ConstituentUpdates/ucm398174.htm

That will give more time to comment and to get groups signed onto the letter in support of stronger food labels (see letter attached below). We have been collecting supporters' names for the letter, and appreciate all the organizations that have already signed on!

The model comments developed by NANA for both rules are also below.

Ways to support:

1) To sign on to the organizational letter of support (attached below), please send your organization's name to Laura MacCleery at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by July 30th.
2) To submit your own comment, fill in the necessary fields on the model comments, edit as you like, and submit at the links below on regs.gov by August 1st:

     * http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=FDA-2012-N-1210-0002 (for Nutrition Facts panel rule)
     * http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=FDA-2004-N-0258-0001 (for Serving Size rule)

Sample Social Media posts:

Facebook:

  * Deadline extended for weighing in with FDA on changes to the Nutrition Facts Panel. Tell them what you think here: http://1.usa.gov/1eLXdzd
  * Tell FDA there's too much salt in our food and consumers should be given a daily value that fits the science on salt: http://1.usa.gov/1eLXdzd
  * Thank FDA for adding a line to the Nutrition Facts Panel for added sugars -- and ask them to require it be listed in teaspoons, so that consumers understand. http://1.usa.gov/1eLXdzd

Twitter

  * Tell FDA your thoughts on food labels, NEW deadline Aug 1: http://1.usa.gov/1eLXdzd
  * Hey FDA, there's WAY too much salt in foods -- can't you do more? We need a lower DV. #FDA #NFP
  * New food label will say how much added sugar is in foods. Thanks, #FDA! #NFP
