Opportunity to Expand Nutrition Services in Federally Qualified Health Centers – Act Now!

Health and Human Services (HHS) has made available $300 million under the Affordable Care Act to help the nation’s Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) expand service hours, hire more medical providers, and/or increase the availability of currently approved medical services. Academy members who currently work in FQHCs have the opportunity to advocate with their facility to request use of these funds to expand MNT services. Applications for this funding are due by July 1, 2014 so members need to talk to their facility administrators today.

Learn more about the funding opportunity by clicking here<http://postlink.www.listbox.com/1730399/4b7ebb75d213f68359716371f6110d40/10062519/6e5390a9?uri=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5oaHMuZ292L25ld3MvcHJlc3MvMjAxNHByZXMvMDYvMjAxNDA2MDNhLmh0bWw>. Key points:

  * MNT/nutrition services must already be within the approved scope of services of the FQHC.
  * Funds could be used to expand hours that MNT services are provided and/or hire additional RDN staff.
  * For FQHCs that provide DSMT and MNT services, such services are considered billable visits and are paid as part of the All Inclusive Rate (AIR).
  * Under the current payment system, FQHCs can bill for MNT and DSMT as an additional visit on the same day that a medical visit is provided. Note: billing changes under the new Prospective Payment System scheduled to begin transition on October 1, 2014.
  * Use your own data along with the Academy’s MNT advocacy tools (available at www.eatright.org/shop<http://postlink.www.listbox.com/1730400/e7959fe76ac594994b1e2d772f015cc8/10062519/6e5390a9?uri=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5lYXRyaWdodC5vcmcvc2hvcA>) to make your case for expanding nutrition services.
