Eating Disorders: Enhancing Awareness, Empathy and Expertise
Thirty Million Americans will struggle with an eating disorder at some time in their life. These illnesses affect people from all walks of life; all ages, ethnicities and genders. Eating disorders have the highest pre-mature mortality rate of any mental illness. And so it is urgent to identify and treat these disorders earlier, and to expand training to more professionals in the field.
Why this symposium?
Karyn Tendler is one of many who died too soon. She died at age 48 from a chronic eating disorder. Her family established the Karyn Tendler NEDA Scholarship fund within the National Eating Disorders Association. However, they know that more needs to be done to meet the need in the community. That is why they introduced Wurzweiler School of Social Work to NEDA. We aim to educate the public about the seriousness of eating disorders. We hope to shed light on its complexity: the causes, symptoms, complications, treatment and potential outcomes. We need more social workers and therapists trained in treating these illnesses and we certainly need more research.
This symposium is open to professionals, educators and families and will take place at Yeshiva University Museum on Monday, April 15th, 2013 from 2:00PM to 5:00PM.
