Senior Director, FeedNYC, Community Impact

Organization

United Way of New York City (UWNYC) is a nonprofit mobilizing people and organizations to eradicate barriers and create opportunities that improve the lives of low-income New Yorkers. Part of the United Way Worldwide system, one of the world's most recognized charitable brands, we envision caring communities in which all individuals and families have access to quality education and the opportunity to lead healthy and financially secure lives. We strive to model our Core Values in all our relationships, both internal and external: Collaboration, Compassion, Integrity, Accountability, and Superior Performance.

UWNYC works side-by-side with individuals, nonprofits, government, businesses, foundations, faith-based organizations, and community partners in developing strategies to produce far-reaching results. We create and fund initiatives focused on improving the quality of life for individuals and families, provide technical assistance, leadership development, and other support to strengthen the capacity of our nonprofit partners, and advocate on important issues affecting our communities. Our revenues were $58 million in FY 2015.

FeedNYC is UWNYC’s initiative to support emergency food programs with food, operations and capital equipment funding as well as training and technical assistance. FeedNYC aims to increase the number of individuals and families leading healthier lives by accessing higher quality food—including locally-grown fresh food—and increasing the capacity of food service providers to deliver their goods and services. The Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program provides the majority of funding for FeedNYC, with funds from the Division of Nutrition, New York State Department of Health. UWNYC has managed this grant since 1984, and currently supports over 360 emergency food programs. The Helmsley Trust also provides funding for the Food Assistance Collaborative, a cross-sector collective impact initiative to improve the efficiency and capacity of the emergency food distribution network in New York City.

FeedNYC achieves its goals by:

· Providing access to and awareness of healthy and nutritious food for individuals and families struggling with food insecurity at emergency food programs (EFPs)

· Developing and sustaining partnership with members of the Policy Committee on NYC Hunger Resources that seek to coordinate, maximize and enhance resources accessible at EFPs

· Working in partnership with the NYC Food Collaborative to develop a 3-year strategy to make the emergency food distribution system more efficient

· Partnering across UWNYC initiatives to connect families and children in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty with emergency food resources

The individual must have deep knowledge, experience, and respect for the emergency food network. His or her expertise and abilities must go beyond emergency food to develop a collective impact approach to reduce reliance on EFP as a chronic support, and expand to other services, supports and benefits to stabilize household incomes and community access to affordable, high quality food and nutrition. The individual responsible for leading this work must be action-oriented, with a thorough understanding of the theory of change process which will be necessary to spark alignment towards a collective impact framework. This individual must be persuasive, confident, and able bring diverse stakeholders together to reach consensus on new policies and procedures.
