The Senate Agriculture Committee Passes Child Nutrition Bill

The Senate Agriculture Committee, unanimously passed, a bi-partisan bill that addresses the administration, scope and funding of child nutrition programs like School Meals, WIC, Child and Adult Care Food Programs, Summer Meals Program, Farm to School and Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Many of the Academy's Child Nutrition Reauthorization recommendations <http://www.eatrightpro.org/~/media/eatrightpro%20files/advocacy/take%20action/getting%20started/overviewcnrrecommendations.ashx> were incorporated into the Senate bill. The Academy will open an action alert in support of the Senate bill in the near future.  It is unclear when the House will address this bill.

 Save the Date for Public Policy Workshop: June 23 to 24  A new format will feature a half-day focus on current issues and a full day of Capitol Hill visits, and an emphasis on pre-meeting, web-based preparation. House Committee Hearing on SNAP in Special Populations

Older adults and veterans face high rates of food insecurity, according to experts at a recent hearing held by the House Agriculture Committee's Subcommittee on Nutrition. The hearing<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r456Nt16oZU> examined the role of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for special populations. Witnesses identified the need to highlight awareness of the availability of SNAP and other programs that promote food security, in alignment with the Academy's efforts. USDA Releases Guide to Professional Standards for School Nutrition Programs

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released information<http://mailer.eatright.org/t/39418/26226065/51259/48/> for state agencies, school food authorities and school nutrition professionals about the Final Rule on Professional Standards for School Nutrition Programs Personnel<http://mailer.eatright.org/t/39418/26226065/51260/49/>. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act included provisions setting professional standards for school nutrition professionals in schools and for state administration of programs.
