REVISED DIETARY GUIDELINES MUST ‘DISH’ ON SUSTAINABILITY

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, our nation's top nutrition advice, are revised every five years. For the first time, the 2015 Guidelines may highlight the benefits of eating in a way that is good for environmental sustainability as well as personal health.

Experts from Teachers College weigh in here on why including sustainability in the revised guidelines is critical for our future.

JOAN GUSSOW on the history of sustainability in the Dietary Guidelines

[http://www.tc.columbia.edu/admin/development/images/j-gussow.jpg]“The idea that the health of agriculture ought once again to be linked to the health of the creatures who ate its products was revived by the growing awareness of the environmental threats introduced by certain ‘modern’ agricultural practices.” Read More ><http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=79f3fb684d&e=813b514291>

PAM KOCH on why is the timing right to include sustainability in the Dietary Guidelines

[http://www.tc.columbia.edu/tisch/about-us/our-team/bios/Pam-resized.jpeg]“The federal government has been given the evidence; it should take the lead to help Americans make healthy and sustainable decisions for current and future generations with the 2015 Guidelines.” Read More ><http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=c6646f6724&e=813b514291>

MATT GRAZIOSE on how a plant-based diet helps to decrease greenhouse gases

[http://www.tc.columbia.edu/tisch/about-us/our-team/bios-2/Matt-resized.jpeg]“The rising demand for meat, fuelled by growing populations and incomes, will place a significant burden on our environment in the coming decades and will contribute to climate variability, threatening future food production and worsening yields. Growing plant foods requires fewer natural resources such as land, water, and soil, and emits fewer polluting gasses when compared to industrially raised livestock.” Read More ><http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=e0f6134528&e=813b514291>

CLAIRE UNO on how sustainability in the Dietary Guidelines would impact government food programs

[http://www.tc.columbia.edu/tisch/about-us/our-team/bios-3/Claire-resized.jpeg]“Imagine more fruits, vegetables, and legumes, and fewer pepperoni or chicken nuggets on 30.3 million children’s school lunch trays across the country each day. Increased demand for fruits and vegetables could influence the types and prices of healthful foods, making them available more broadly to the community.” Read More ><http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=9a3933e74f&e=813b514291>

MAGGIE MOON on what sustainability in the Dietary Guidelines would mean for Americans

[http://www.tc.columbia.edu/i/media/9923_maggie-moon.jpg]“Including sustainability as an integral part of creating the ‘culture of health’ called for by DGAC 2015 is a game changer for American citizens, who, up until now, have alone carried the burden of making the right food choices for themselves, their families, and by extension, deciding what kind of food system to support.” Read More ><http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=dcc0e1e367&e=813b514291>
