Nutrition Research Internship Opportunity, New York University School of Medicine

Department of Population Health



We are conducting an exciting new project to pilot test the effects of cooking and nutrition education on dietary outcomes in elementary school children, grades 3-5. The project will be led by a dual-sector partnership between the NYU School of Medicine, Department of Population Health and Common Threads.



Common Threads (CT) is a nonprofit organization that delivers nutrition and cooking education to children in grades 3-8, with the ultimate goal of reducing childhood obesity. Since inception, CT has reached 141,060 individuals and trained 2,800 teachers with its multi-level programming at the child, family, teacher and school levels. CT operates in 9 major cities including NYC, Chicago, Miami, Washington DC, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. Ninety-two percent of the students who participate in CT’s programs qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Students are ethnically diverse (27% Black, 41% Hispanic, 11% White, 4% Asian).



We are looking for a bright, motivated student with a background in nutrition to assist in the implementation of this pilot project starting in January  2017. The intern will assist in conducting 24-hour recalls in elementary school-aged children onsite in two NYC elementary schools. The intern will also assist in data entry and cleaning, as well as provide additional research support to the project.



Interns will be expected to:

1.       Conduct 24-hour dietary recall interviews with children grades 3-5. This will be onsite in two NYC elementary schools.

2.       Work closely with the project investigators and nutritionist on study implementation.

3.       Assist in data entry and data cleaning.

4.       Assist in the development of reports and other dissemination materials.

5.       Conduct literature reviews on diet-related topics, as needed.

6.       Attend team meetings to share experiences and feedback with project investigators.



Intern Qualifications:

1.      Currently enrolled in graduate level program in nutrition, public health or other applicable degree.

2.       Interest in issues of food access and nutrition education.

3.       Ability and experience in conducting nutrition assessments using validated instruments.

4.       Experience with data entry and cleaning of nutrition data.

5.       Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented.

6.       Commitment to working in underserved communities.

7.       Ability to work independently.

8.       Speaking/reading fluency in Spanish, preferred.

9.       Ability to travel to all five NYC boroughs.



 Time Commitment:

This is a part-time, paid internship that starts in January and ends June 2017.  Schedule will vary from week to week, with some weeks requiring more hours and some requiring less.  Approximate overall time commitment for the six month period is at least 120 hours.

Within the Center of Excellence for Eating and Weight Disorders, provides quality nutrition care and education to patients and family members. Must be able to provide one on one consultations to evaluate the nutritional needs of patients (children, adolescents, adults) with eating disorders, and assist with research in the Eating and Weight Disorders Program. 7. Assists with discharge planning from intensive outpatient care as needed.

8. Participates in daily meal preparation and observation as needed.

9. Uses discretion to maintain confidentiality concerning employees, patients and Mount Sinai to protect the privacy and rights of all involved.

10. Actively participates in Performance Improvement programs with satisfactory compliance.

11. Consults with physicians, psychologists, and other support staff regarding continuity of care through direct and indirect means.

13. Helps to develop a laboratory for the objective study of eating among individuals with and without eating and weight disorders.

Neighborhood WIC, a program of Public Health Solutions, provides special supplemental foods, nutrition education and counseling to low-income pregnant women, infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk. We are seeking bilingual (English/Mandarin) Nutritionist to assess the eligibility of WIC applicants, implement the nutrition education component of our program and supervise support staff (WIC clerks, Program Assistant).



Specifically, the Nutritionist will:

• Verify and document eligibility of WIC participants including participation in hematological & anthropometric activities

• Provide individual and facilitated group discussion

• Assist in developing and evaluating literature, posters, videos and DVDs

• Participate in NYSDOH WIC Quarterly Assurance Evaluation to ensure compliance with WIC's regulations and enhance efficiency in core services offered

• Provide accurate documentation for measuring changes in participants nutritional status

• Maintain internal (Public Health Solutions programs that are pertinent to WIC participants) and external relationships (Community based organizations and providers)



Qualifications:

• A Bachelor's degree from accredited college with a major in foods and nutrition, including at least 18 semester credits in nutrition

• Proficient computer skills, WICSIS documentation - determine risk factors

• Bilingual (English/Mandarin)

• Must have exemplary customer service skills

Qualifications

The IRC nutrition team’s objective is to support country programs to increase access and coverage to effective and responsive nutrition interventions so women and children are protected from and treated for malnutrition. The nutrition team’s core programming include the community based management of acute malnutrition and infant and young child feeding programs. The IRC nutrition team is leading efforts in developing transformative strategies for treating malnourished children by putting treatment within reach of people who need it through the integration of malnutrition treatment into community case management and unifying moderate and severe malnutrition by testing a combined treatment protocol.



Scope: The Specialist, Nutrition would be part of this dynamic team working to shape the way we treat malnutrition,  support effective approaches to infant and young child feeding and any other strategic priorities chosen (i.e., maternal nutrition, micronutrients, etc.). The Specialist, Nutrition is responsible for developing effective tools and training resources; capacity building and institutional learning, reviewing surveys and designing assessments in coordination with field staff; coordinating Research and Development (R&D) support for organizational research priorities; supporting research projects and new initiatives and leading global data synthesis for the impact of IRC’s nutrition programs. Support IRC countries with nutritional assessments in the field, including SQUEACs, SMART and IYCF surveys

Support the roll-out of the thought leadership research initiatives by helping in the development of tools, curriculum and guidelines for country teams

This Position ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Contract managment company seeking full time Registered Dietitian to provide clinical nutrition oversight for a senior living facility located in the Cooperstown, NY area.



Conducting nutritional assessments; consulting with interdisciplinary team members regarding nutritional problems and implementing various mediate nutrition therapies such as therapeutic diets, nutrition support, nutritional supplementation and assist wiht menu development/reviewing menu cycles and changes.
