Research Assistant Internship

NYU Langone Health & VA New York Harbor Healthcare System -Manhattan Campus

Position Description/Responsibilities: Dr. Melanie Jay, MD, MS, (Associate Professor, Department of
Medicine, NYU School of Medicine) is seeking bright, motivated research interns interested in pursuing a
career in healthcare and obesity-related research. Interns will assist in a research project to improve the
prevention and treatment of obesity in primary care. Interns contribute primarily to the Financial Incentives
for Weight Reduction (FIReWoRk) study, led by Dr. Melanie Jay and Dr. Joseph Ladapo (UCLA). The
FIReWoRk study investigates the impact of financial incentives on weight management behavior and
weight loss. Interns may also work on the Goals for Eating and Moving (GEM) and Peer-Assisted Lifestyle
(PAL) studies as needed.

Research interns assist in all aspects of the study including (but not limited to): conducting literature
searches and reviews, recruiting patients/participants by phone and/or mail, administering survey
instruments, conducting study visits, managing and analyzing data, preparing abstracts and manuscripts,
and other administrative duties. Interns must be fully bilingual in English and Spanish.

Time commitment: Part-time, 10-15 hours per week on average are required including a weekly
research lab meeting currently held on Mondays at 10:15 a.m. Applicants must be able to commit to one
year, including availability during the summer.

Benefits: This research internship is an opportunity to gain experience working with researchers of
diverse, interdisciplinary backgrounds on a critical issue in healthcare. This position is part of the NYU
Division of General Internal Medicine's Research Intern Program, and as such interns have many
opportunities to be mentored by team members, as well as attend conferences and lectures offered by
the NYU School of Medicine. Interns often go on to medical school, PhD programs, or paid research
coordinator positions.

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Funding for the position is not available and cannot be
promised at this time, but a modest stipend might become available. Research interns may have the
opportunity to be co-authors of abstracts and manuscripts, depending on their involvement with
preparation. Upon completion of the internship, interns may be able to fulfill practicum requirements, gain
academic credit, and/or receive letters of recommendation for graduate school and job placement.

The office is located at the Manhattan VA Hospital on East 23rd St. and 1st Ave. This position may require
some travel to Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
