On behalf of the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and its Northeast regional executive board, we would like to cordially invite you to attend the 45th Annual LMSA Northeast Regional Conference.
What is LMSA-Northeast?
The Latino Medical Student Association-Northeast (LMSA-NE), is a Latino student group representing health professions students from the Northeast region of the United States. Its mission is to recruit Latinos into higher education, educate the public and one another about Latino health issues, advocate for increased Latino representation in health related areas, and promote awareness about social, political and economic issues as they relate to Latino health. It also serves to create a support network for Latino students.
What is the LMSA Northeast Regional Conference?
The Annual LMSA Northeast Regional Conference brings together around 400 Latino high school students, premedical students, medical students, graduating physicians, residents, and practicing physicians interested in serving the healthcare needs of their community. This year's Regional Conference will include special keynote speakers (Miriam Zoila Perez and Ana Nuñez), a series of workshops on the healthcare needs of the Latino community, student leadership training, healthcare policy, and several networking events.
As a Hispanic/Latino(a) premedical student, what will the regional conference offer me?
This year's conference theme is "Construyendo Puentes: Overcoming Barriers for a Healthier Community". In similar respects, our goal for you as a Hispanic/Latino(a) premedical student is to empower your academic motivations by providing you with resources that will allow you to overcome the challenges of any premedical curriculum and build a bridge towards your goals of becoming a future physician. The regional conference will highlight the 3 major pillars of pre-medicine: MCAT, the medical school application, and research.
1) MCAT
Examkrackers, arguably the highest-rated and best MCAT preparation company in the country, will be on-site on the day of the conference to assist students with anything MCAT-related. Licensed MCAT personnel and instructors will be available to answer exam-related questions, provide study tips and tools for success, as well as offer promotional discounts and deals that are exclusive to conference attendees. With the increasing competitiveness in applying to medical school, along with the importance that your MCAT score carries in admissions decisions, this workshop will allow you to take your preparation into your own hands and help form a strategy that is guaranteed to succeed!
2) Medical School Application
The application process is a lengthy one and can be daunting at times without the proper guidance. Through the "Journey to Medical School" workshop, conference attendees will have to opportunity to participate in a Q&A-styled setting with various Hispanic/Latino(a) medical students as they share their personal stories and the obstacles they overcame on their respective journeys to medical school. Additionally, Dr. Clara Callahan, Dean of Students and Admissions for Sidney Kimmel Medical College since 1999, will be in attendance to share her advice and experiences regarding medical school applicants after almost 20 years of admitting students into medical school. This panel serves as an excellent opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of the application process and also gain valuable insight from students who have successfully navigated their premedical curriculums and who wish for you to do the same!
3) Research
Medical school has been increasing in competitiveness year after year, with more schools seeking applicants who have engaged in scientific research presentations of some sort. If you have participated in community-based, scientific, or clinical research during your undergraduate career, you are in luck! As part of Northeast LMSA's mission to support scholarly research, the regional conference will host a research poster session that will consist of an opportunity to share your work with other students, professionals, and judges at the conference. Judges will include professors and physicians who will be evaluating you on your understanding of the research you performed, clarity and flow in oral presentation, and ability to answer questions about your project. This event will serve as ample opportunity to present your research in a medical school setting that includes hundreds of conference attendees, and can be a memorable academic experience to talk about on your medical school application!
It is our primary goal to advocate for all Hispanic/Latino(a) students in the Northeast region and provide you with the educational resources and social opportunities necessary to make your goals of being admitted into medical school a reality. As such, I speak from personal experience in saying that the Regional Conference will provide you with just that, as well as countless of other opportunities for exposure to and interaction with medical students and members of the LMSA family who wish to support your academic and personal endeavors!
