MSIH Graduates Are More Than Just White Coats

The Medical School for International Health (MSIH) at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) offers a small and challenging[https://gallery.mailchimp.com/0efcbd5002a6c92198432b561/images/c6ba77ca-ce03-476e-9802-c4b63cdb6e1f.jpg] four-year program that prepares students to practice medicine in the United States and around the world — as well as across cultural, geographic and technological boundaries. MSIH is a unique program that integrates global health into each stage of our expert medical training. Graduates are highly trained physicians who understand how to work at the intersection of global health and community and preventive medicine.

An English-language track at Ben-Gurion University, MSIH has been affiliated with Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons since inception. BGU and MSIH also have affiliations with other medical [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/0efcbd5002a6c92198432b561/images/47f10ae6-8955-46ea-aa04-3f90db186a13.jpg] schools throughout the world, including in North America and, of course, Israel. The diversity of MSIH’s affiliations benefits our students. MSIH students will spend three years studying in Israel, take fourth-year electives at prestigious medical centers in the United States or Canada, and complete an eight-week global health clerkship at one of several approved resource-deprived sites around the world. Past global health clerkship sites include Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Uganda.

This broad international experience helps prepare students for a meaningful medical career. Graduates of MSIH enjoy high match rates parallel to those of students at top medical schools in the U.S. (90% in 2017). An M.D. from MSIH offers a clear path to U.S. residency and students gain the training necessary to practice medicine while meeting the challenges of global health — and make a real impact.

Student Spotlight: MSIH fourth year student Luisa Bonilla Hernandez

Luisa was born in Bogota, Colombia and after finishing high school there she moved to Canada. At Western she volunteered extensively, including studying and volunteering in Rwanda, Ghana and France. Prior to attending MSIH, Luisa completed her Masters Degree in global health at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Luisa speaks five different languages. In the video, Luisa talks about her experiences at MSIH and how students are exposed to diverse patients from southern Israel’s Bedouin and Ethiopian communities, as well as immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East. Specifically, Luisa notes that "being in the Negev is different especially because there is a combination of such different cultures." She adds that "genetic diseases that one would learn in the book but never expect to see, you would see them here."
