Preparing for your interview

[retreat]

So you’ve submitted your application and are hopeful about your chances for an interview. Days or weeks go by while your application is under review. Then the phone call or email arrives, “You’ve Got Interview!” You yell and smile with excitement then realize, “how do I prepare for this?” Well, it’s time to settle down and get started — even if you don’t get an early invite, it’s never too soon to prepare.

Do your homework! Know about the program you’re interviewing for so you can respond to and ask questions. You should also find out about the interview structures for the schools you are interviewing at (or schools you’ve applied to) because every school is different.

Consider, who will you meet and how will conversations take place? Schools have various interview formats, including, panels, 1-1, group and multiple mini interviews (MMIs) with faculty, staff, students, or even alumni. You’ll also want to find out if interviews are “open file” or “closed file” — will interviewers have access to your application?

Once you have those questions answered, time to roll up your sleeves. You’ll want to prepare like you would for a job interview and be ready to discuss your entire application and interest, including why dentistry, personal and professional goals, academics, extra-curricular / leadership activities and work/life experience. You should also be prepared to confidently and respectfully address any blemishes in your application.

Many of your undergraduate schools have career centers that provide mock interviews – see your advisor or schedule an appointment. You can also use print or online interview guides for tips. Practicing with a friend and receiving feedback works too.

In general, you want to make a good first impression during your interview: make eye contact, be articulate, positive, humble and engaging, and dress professionally. Remember, receiving an invite is a good sign – schools see you as a potential dental student. Nonetheless, interviews are important to gauge of your academic history, maturity, leadership, ability to work in teams as well as communication and critical thinking skills.

The event included a guest speaker, team-building activities, a boat cruise on the San Francisco bay and a day of community service at the San Francisco Botanical Gardens, Golden Gate Audubon Society, Glide Memorial, Project Open Hand and the San Francisco Food Bank.
