We are excited to invite you to a Roosevelt House event celebrating International Human Rights Day 2016 this Friday, December 9 at 1pm.



It will be an exceptional event, featuring:





-          remarks by United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson



-          performance by the UN Chamber Music Society



-          "Stand up for someone's rights" panel discussion moderated by Margaret Besheer, the UN correspondent for Voice of America, and including Cynthia Soohoo, Board President of the US Human Rights Network; Andrew Gilmour, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights; Dr. Deqo Waqaf, Chief Executive Officer of the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation; and more

The session will cover scholarship and fellowship opportunities for current students and soon-to-be graduates, including the Humanity in Action (especially relevant for students of human rights), Fulbright, Marshall, and more. Finally, please SAVE THE DATE for our event on Thursday, December 15 at 5pm at Roosevelt House commemorating the 50th anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). The Covenants expanded upon and codified in treaty form the rights proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). There will be a panel discussion focusing on the quest for universal ratification of both treaties, and a second panel exploring the impact of the covenants historically and going forward. Speakers will include: Michael Posner, Professor at NYU's Stern School of Business, Blanche Wiesen Cook, distinguished professor of history and Eleanor Roosevelt biographer, Beth Simmons, Professor in Law and Political Science at Penn Law, and many more. Commemoration of International Human Rights Day 2016



“Stand Up for Someone's Rights Today”



Friday, December 9, 2016

To mark the 68th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, the UN will present its annual Human Rights Day event at Roosevelt House on Friday, December 9th, at 1:00pm.



Jan Eliasson, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, will deliver the keynote address.  Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Andrew Gilmour, will launch the UN Human Rights Office's “Stand up for someone's rights today – Take action”<https://community.hunter.cuny.edu/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwww.ohchr.org%2fEN%2fNewsEvents%2fHRDay2016%2fPages%2fStandUp4HumanRightsTakeAction.aspx&srcid=18776&srctid=1&erid=3596406&trid=1d35fd59-3985-4398-a00c-b3c19ec88aaa> global campaign. The campaign is a practical effort to amplify the call by the United Nations to people across the world to stand up for rights, including in their everyday life – in the workplace, on the sports field, at school, in the street.



The program will also feature a performance by the UN Chamber Music Society, and a panel discussion, moderated by Margaret Besheer, the UN correspondent for Voice of America.  Other participants include Cynthia Soohoo, Board President of the US Human Rights Network; Dr. Deqo Waqaf, Chief Executive Officer of the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation; and Mohammad Al Abdallah, Executive Director of the Syria Justice and Accountability Centre.
