**Did you know that one out of five American adults reads at the 5th grade level or below, and the average American reads at the 8th to 9th grade level, yet most health care materials are written above the 10th grade level? The health of 90 million people in the U.S. may be at risk because of the difficulty some patients experience in understanding and acting upon health information.

The New York Methodist Hospital<http://www.nym.org/Get-Involved/Volunteer-Opportunities/How-to-apply-to-volunteer.aspx> Health Literacy program, Health Smarts While You Wait, is recruiting for the summer/fall session! The Health Literacy Program<http://www.nym.org/Get-Involved/Volunteer-Opportunities/Health-Literacy-Volunteer.aspx> is designed to empower patients to manage their health in a more informed way by helping them understand and apply basic health information.
Health Literacy volunteers work individually or in pairs to present health-related information in plain language in the waiting rooms of various outpatient clinics on the New York Methodist Hospital campus (Park Slope, Brooklyn). Volunteers present to a group of patients as well as engage one-on-one with waiting patients.

This is a position for students who are comfortable with public speaking to large and small groups. There is a minimum commitment of 6 months and 24 shifts. Shifts are once a week, Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm or 1pm-4pm. Students must be available during the school year. Bilingual Spanish preferred.
