Event Information

Description

Join us at our Annual Women in STEM Summit at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Our theme this year is Catalysts for Change. We are committed to building a culture that respects and embraces gender diversity, inclusion, and equity. Throughout the day, we will feature women who are at the forefront of their fields: innovative…smart…driven…and changing the STEM landscape.

Our closing dinner will feature a welcome address by Lisa Coleman, Senior Vice President for Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation and the Chief Diversity Officer at NYU and keynote remarks by Professor Beth Noveck, Director of the GovLab and the Jerry M. Hultin Professor. We will also be honoring Tandon student Cadence Daniels, President of the NYU Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), for her outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the Tandon community. Over dinner, students will have the opportunity to network and engage in conversation with alumni and corporate representatives.

Featured Guests:

· Dr. Lisa M. Coleman is New York University’s (NYU) inaugural Senior Vice President for Global Inclusion, Diversity and Strategic Innovation. In this role, she is responsible for advancing strategic leadership, global inclusion, belonging, and innovation initiatives across NYU’s global campus and schools. Prior to NYU, Dr. Coleman served as the first Chief Diversity Officer and Special Assistant to the President at Harvard University, 2010-2017 where she worked with leaders across Harvard’s schools, arts, museums and executive education programs.

Dr. Coleman earned her doctorate in Social and Cultural Analysis, American Studies from NYU and three master’s degrees from the Ohio State University in African and African American Studies; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and Communication Studies. Her undergraduate foci were sociology/anthropology and computer science. She continues to engage multiple forms of education and learning, and is dedicated to creating and cultivating inclusive cultures of innovation combined with scholarly research and principles of critically engaged teaching and learning.

· Beth Simone Noveck directs the Governance Lab (GovLab) and its MacArthur Research Network on Opening Governance. She is a Professor of Technology, Culture, and Society at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering. Her current research focuses on “people-led innovation,” namely the ability of communities and institutions to work together to solve problems more effectively and legitimately.

A graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, she is a member of the Board of the Center for Open Science and the advisory boards of the Open Contracting Partnership and the EPSRC Centre for Precision Healthcare at Imperial College. She is also a member of the Global Future Council on Technology, Values, and Policy for the World Economic Forum. She serves on the Steering Committee for the Collective Intelligence Conferences.

Beth was named one of the “Foreign Policy 100″ by Foreign Policy, one of the “100 Most Creative People in Business” by Fast Company and one of the “Top Women in Technology” by Huffington Post. She tweets @bethnoveck.

· Cadence Daniels, a senior at the Tandon School of Engineering, is pursuing her undergraduate degree in Integrated Digital Media, concentrating in Interaction Design & Ethics in Engineering, with a minor in Computer Science. After finding fellowship in the NYU Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, Cadence went on to be elected President to increase cultural awareness on campus while strengthening the academic and professional success of underrepresented students.

An internship at the NYU Entrepreneurial Institute provided the opportunity to get involved in more initiatives aimed towards elevating diversity and collaboration within the NYU community. There, Cadence co-founded Women of Entrepreneurship: NYU’s first campus-wide student group for women entrepreneurs. As Creative Director of the Annual NYU Entrepreneurs Festival, Cadence also managed a collaborative team to construct and market the current year’s brand in conjunction with the identity of NYU and the Entrepreneurial Institute.

Featured in NYU’s 2017 Top Influential Students by Washington Square News, Cadence was recognized for her work in diversity, entrepreneurship and community development. After graduation, Cadence will be joining the Digital Technology Leadership Program at General Electrical (GE) Digital in June 2018.
