Bob,

You are as persuasive as ever. "Critical Thinking" simpliciter will be just fine. And, as you say, any addition risks making things too complicated.

Subject: Re: adding a new AOC/AOS to PhilJobs

Unfortunately Michael Gilbert’s suggestion of “Critical Thinking/Argumentation Theory” risks the equivocation I warned about in my paper at OSSA in May of this year, "Definition: A Three-Dimensional Analysis with Bearing on Key Concepts”.

Most philosophers are not accustomed to treating “argumentation” to include an emphasis on successful persuasion and rhetoric, though I agree that these these concerns are very important in practical life, just like many other things. The philosophical concept of argumentation is focused on attempts to justify. So “Argumentation Theory" as Michael Gilbert (and a number of others these days) interprets it would be misleading. See for example his Arguing with People, Broadview Press, 2014.

I agree with Kevin Possin in his rejection of Michael’s suggestion.

However, I am also reluctant to add “Informal logic”. Back in 1983, when AILACT was organized, “informal logic” meant about the same as "critical thinking”. The title “AILACT” was a compromise between people from the United States who emphasized "critical thinking" and those from Canada who emphasized "informal logic". But I’m not sure what “informal logic” means now to its inventors (Tony Blair and Ralph Johnson). And because it explicitly excludes the deductive logic that is so popular with philosophers, it will arouse suspicions. Lastly, it just makes things more complicated.

I urge us to pursue giving critical thinking simpliciter a higher official standing in philosophy. One way is by making it a possible AOS and AOC in philosophy jobs listings. That’s a big enough task.

Perhaps it would help if were listed as Critical Thinking/Argumentation Theory.

Dear Colleagues,

I agree with Harvey that Bob¹s question is a good one. How about starting
with talking to Mike Morris who evidently fields questions about PhilJobs?
(See http://www.apaonline.org/?page=pj_jfp<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.apaonline.org_-3Fpage-3Dpj-5Fjfp&d=CwMF-g&c=mRWFL96tuqj9V0Jjj4h40ddo0XsmttALwKjAEOCyUjY&r=KTO-67piPlkvVwpkegE90CPhOOUVOHyNkd2ycJxraVlOjFMzr4s8w_Q89bvfLZgJ&m=87u1OzaRW7Hxx6yCvCXh7cfzWZAuar2hjOvCeUYYeqo&s=C9TTnHtWtno8A0WTgH-72Bhr8fRIHJt0QJoRIErjeSo&e=>) We can simply ask him if the
limitation preventing the speciality from being listed as an AOC or AOS is
still in force, and, if it is, what the possible process would be to add a
new AOC or AOS. Perhaps only inertia is standing in the way?

For what it is worth I¹d propose that, if a new category can be added to
either the AOC or AOS listings, it be Informal Logic and Critical Thinking.

Hi Jim and all,

Thanks, Jim, for clearing up a confusing situation. I hope I can
remember AILACTD-L, including that the dash goes between the D and the
L. My memory isn¹t as good as it used to be.

I have a question for discussion:

What can we do about the fact that critical thinking is not recognized
as an area of competence or specialization by "Jobs for Philosophers"?
Many philosophy jobs do include at least teaching critical thinking, and
a number of topics considered by philosophers are relevant to what is
taught in critical thinking, such as causality, inference to best
explanation, speech acts, the fact-value distinction, etc.

PS. By the way Jim, I would rather that you use the address I am using
now than the one to which you sent your communication. The one I am
using now seems to be more reliable and is more appropriate for the
subject.
