February 7 (Friday)
Do New Yorkers Have the Right to Know How Their Food is Produced?

Event Description: Slow Food NYC is holding its inaugural Food & Farm Policy Roundtable on Friday, February 7th to discuss the rights New York citizens have as consumers when it comes to knowing how their food is produced. We will take on thorny issues, such as GMO labeling and the use of antibiotics in food animals.

Consumer Reports director of Consumer Safety and Sustainability, Dr. Urvashi Rangan, and Campaign Director for GMO Free NY, Stacie Orell, will begin the discussion. We have invited a number of other experts. Stay tuned for further announcements on additional speakers.

A small-scale farmer on a dairy farm, Timmermeister tells the story of how he prepared a single marvelous farm-to-table meal using only the bounty that his farm provides - a two-year chronicle beginning with the birth of the calf whose milk will eventually be made into cheese and ending with the final course of coffee and butter cookies. Along the way we meet Leda, who trades onion seedlings for Kurt's cheese; Michiko, who forages the white chanterelles for the antipasti course; and Bill, whose large, thin-skinned tomatoes will form the basis of the tomato upside-down cake. Rich in detail, resonant in story, Growing a Feast depicts the effort behind every meal, the farm that comes before every table.

Author Kurt Timmermeister ran his own Seattle-based cafes before buying a four-acre plot of land on Vashon Island in Washington's Puget Sound, an experience he recounted in his first book, Growing a Farmer. Now 13 acres, Kurtwood Farms specializes in producing farmstead artisan cheeses.

This event is free and open to everyone. Free samples of cheese from Kurtwood Farm will be provided. Proceeds from book sales will benefit Slow Food NYC programs, including Urban Harvest, our educational program for children. We hope to see you there.
